Aikido here is a martial art, not a philosophy class.

You’ll be grabbed and thrown. The first thing we teach is how to fall and get back up unhurt.

You’ll sweat. Most people are surprised by that.

Pick your day.

Class runs four days a week. Your first one’s free. Come whichever fits your schedule.

We’re upstairs at 2515 W Girard Ave, Studio A. Use the door just to the left of the Koa Strength entrance, then head up the stairs. Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Doors lock when class starts. We’ll meet you at the top. Zazen follows some classes, and you’re welcome to stay for it. Misogi is something you build up to.

Why train here.

  1. Sensei’s on the mat with you.

Small dojo. The person teaching you is the one who runs it, and he’s taking falls beside you, not calling techniques from the edge of the room.

  2. Hard training you don’t age out of.

The intensity is built to last decades. Lynwood came back to the mat at sixty-seven. He’s sixty-nine now and still training.

  3. It has to work on someone who resists.

No magic, little mysticism. A technique gets tested on people who don’t cooperate, otherwise aikido’s just dance. We’re not just dancing.

“I started with zero knowledge and no martial arts experience. The instructor is kind but rigorous and has gladly given me the attention and teaching I need to learn and grow. There is no coddling here, and if you are looking for a challenge of mind and body, this is the place.”

Carlo I.Carlo I.

“I started here as a complete novice, and in not the best physical shape. It’s been a struggle, but practicing here has really improved my life.”

What it costs after.

$100 a month for unlimited classes, every discipline included. $20 a class if you’re visiting from another dojo. Ranked members also pay $75 a year to Birankai, the aikido federation we belong to.

If dues are the thing standing in the way, ask about a scholarship. That’s what it’s there for.

From me

“If you want to train, this is a good place to train. And I hope you train with us! But I won’t try to convince you.

When I found my teacher’s dojo in Brooklyn, nobody had to sell me on it. I watched and knew. So come watch a class, or better, take one.”
