Martial arts for adults · Philadelphia
It’s not too late to start.
No experience and no particular fitness level needed. Your first class is free.
Book my first class →Starting as an adult.
Everyone started at zero at some point. The mat is a mix of people who’ve trained before and people who haven’t.
Your first class starts with learning to fall. Technique is mostly shown, with a little talk sometimes.
Aikido is at the center of what we do: throws, pins, and joint locks. Some days you train against resistance, some days it’s more flowing. Around it we train with the wooden sword and staff, and sit zazen, seated meditation.

Pick your day.
Class runs four days a week. Your first one’s free. Come whichever fits your schedule.
- Wednesday7:00 – 7:50 PMAikidoStart here. Our fullest class of the week.

We’re upstairs at 2515 W Girard Ave, Studio A. Use the door just to the left of the Koa Strength entrance, then head up the stairs. Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Doors lock when class starts. We’ll meet you at the top. Zazen follows some classes, and you’re welcome to stay for it. Misogi is something you build up to.
Why train here.
It’s never too late.
Lynwood came back to the mat at sixty-seven. He’s sixty-nine now and still training.
A mix of levels.
Beginners train in the same classes as people who’ve been at it a long time, so there’s always someone a step ahead of you.
Sensei trains with you.
The person who runs the dojo teaches, and he trains alongside you instead of watching from the side of the room.

Dominic H.“Been going here for a few months now. Training here has been enlightening, constructive and fun! Most unique feature is meditation; a pleasantly unexpected experience that supports my Aikido and my personal life. Highly recommend training here!!!!”
Danielle C.“I am a new student, not yet 1 year in. I am so grateful to begin this learning journey with Lemon Hill Aikido. I always leave class feeling equal parts ready, activated, and curious to learn more.”
What it costs after.
$100 a month for unlimited classes, every discipline included. $20 a class if you’re visiting from another dojo. Ranked members also pay $75 a year to Birankai, the aikido federation we belong to.
If dues are the thing standing in the way, ask about a scholarship. That’s what it’s there for.
Questions.
Do I need any experience?
None at all. Everyone started at zero at some point, and the mat is a mix of people who’ve trained before and people who haven’t.
How fit do I need to be?
Come as you are. Training is rigorous, but we meet each student where they are. You’ll build fitness naturally through practice. We have members of all ages and fitness levels.
Do I need to buy a uniform or weapons?
Not to start. If you continue, you’ll need a dogi (training uniform, about $60 to $90). For weapons classes you’ll eventually need a bokken (wooden sword) and jo (staff). We’ll tell you what to get and when.
What if I can't afford it?
We believe Aikido should be available to all, regardless of income. We offer partial need-based scholarships to serious students. Email us to inquire.
Where do I park?
Girard Ave is metered. Free street parking is usually easy to find a block south, around Robert Morris School at 26th and Thompson.

From me
“If you want to train, this is a good place to train. And I hope you train with us! But I won’t try to convince you.
When I found my teacher’s dojo in Brooklyn, nobody had to sell me on it. I watched and knew. So come watch a class, or better, take one.”
